Traditional Knowledge Management Session
Incorporating Traditional Knowledge into Management
Session Theme
The theme of this special session is to outline HOW (methodology) Traditional Knowledge (TK) should be collected and incorporated into natural science research and management.
The target or primary audience for this session is the caribou researcher and manager, with the intent of explaining to him/her with case study examples of HOW (i.e., specific methodologies for how) anecdotal local knowledge (also known as TK, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), Aboriginal traditional knowledge (ATK), and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit local knowledge (IQ LK)) is collected, analyzed, and incorporated into specific research and management questions/issues. The secondary audience is the aboriginal resource user.
The researcher/manager is the target audience because those people have been identified as having the most need for an understanding of how social science methodologies work to collect and analyze TK.
Session Structure:
- 3 hours (180 Minutes) total time
- Key Note Speaker 20 mins (15 min presentation plus 5 min question period)
- 6 Case Studies 90 mins (10 min presentation plus 5 min question period for each)
- Panel Discussion 40 mins (includes 2 – 5 min question periods)
- Audience Questions 30 minutes
Key Note Speaker (1): should define TK (TK, TEK, ATK, IQ LK) for the audience and put into context, in a general sense, HOW it is used and WHY it should be used in the research management process. The definitions of TK are important to set the stage for the HOW to use and WHY to use that will follow. The Key Note Speaker will be invited by the AUC working group
Case studies (6): present specific examples of methodologies used for incorporation of TK into research. Case study presenters will be solicited through a Call for Abstracts. Presenters will be from local and international communities.
Panel Discussion (5 person panel, including the key note speaker): will provide a pro-con critique of the main topics presented in the case studies and will also point the way to what the next steps should be for the further incorporation of TK into research and management. Panel Members will be invited and include representatives from local and international communities.
Audience question period: The moderator will balance the access to the microphone between locals and researchers.
Session Location: Tree of Peace Friendship Centre (large hall)
We are currently soliciting a call for abstracts. We are specifically looking for speakers to present specific examples of methodologies used for incorporation of TK into research.
